The second international day of clean air for blue skies of the year highlights the link between air pollution, human health and the environment.
Air pollution is evidently the largest contributor to the burden of disease from the environment and is the main avoidable causes of death and disease globally. Did you know that the World Health Organisation warns us that 99% of the worlds population is breathing polluted air? It is also known that 7 million people die each year due to air pollution, with 90% of them in low and middle-income countries (WHO, Lancet Planetary Health).
Petrol and diesel cars heavily contribute to air pollution. As cars create heat during the combustion process, nitrogen from the air can be transformed into nitrogen oxides which is a gas that heavily irritates the lungs and the eyes. Not only this, but the burning of gasoline also creates other harmful by products during combustion such as – Carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, benzene and formaldehyde. These by products are having a drastic effect on the environment, adding to the air pollution and effecting citizens health.
So where does Electric Vehicle charging come into this? With no tailpipe, pure Electric Vehicles simply produce no carbon dioxide and the by products which a combustion engine produces. This means when an electric vehicle is being used, it is contributing to cleaner air and a better environment.
Less air pollution in the environment unambiguously means that the streets will be cleaner, towns and cities become a better place to live and overall, a better place for pedestrians and cyclists.

It is claimed that it is one of the best places on the planet to take a breath. In a future where the air is cleaner, citizens will benefit from better respiratory systems, better skin, reduced chances of long-term medical conditions such as heart disease. Not to forget the positive impact environmentally especially regarding global warming.
